poster for Isamu Iida "Border Transgression Zone"

This event has ended.

This photographer has been reporting on North Koreans fleeing into China for 10 years, and on seven occasions has traveled through the area where most refugees cross the border. At the time of his first visit, it was easy to come across these Koreans on the street, but the situation has changed; border security has become stricter in the past few years, and those caught are immediately forced to return to North Korea. Despite these restrictions, there are over 100,000 North Korean defectors living in this autonomous region due to the fact this region has been established as the autonomous region of Koreans. Korean is spoken, Korean food is sold, and many residents have relatives in Korea. They help their fellow countrymen that are fleeing and shelter them. This exhibition will display works that the photographer took on these visits.
