"Toulouse-Lautrec and the Parisian Life" Exhibition
This event has ended.
At Suntory Museum
Media: Painting, Art Talk
Toulouse-Lautrec was born in a high-class family in southern France, and indulged in attending dance halls, theaters and prostitute houses, where he trained his draftsmanship. His dynamic compositions represent an affection towards those depicted, and he is known for making sharp observations of society. With a short life of 37 years, most of his notable works were created during his final ten years. The exhibition focuses Lautrec's achievements during this period when he produced masterpieces of various genres. In addition to the museum collection, there will be works on loan from the Musée d'Orsay's Lautrec collection, master oil paintings from around the world, prints, posters, illustrations, sketches, and reference sources, which will allow viewers to comprehend the essence of Lautrec's work. An investigation of the relationship between Ukiyoe prints and Lautrec's works will also be presented. Lautrec, with his contemporaries such as van Gogh, Gauguin, Cezanne and Seurat, was one of the few who created a new form of post-Impressionist art.
