"Edo's Kuge Culture" Exhibition

This event has ended.
At Saiku Historical Museum
Media: Calligraphy, Fashion, Crafts

Kuge (aristocratic) culture that flourished among the upper-class during the Heian period, diminished during the turbulent Sengoku period. However, during the Edo period when society became more peaceful, there was a renaissance of Kuge culture through the revival of court ceremonies; artisans referred to paintings, crafts and literature that were produced during the Heiwa period such as the Tale of Genji and Ise Monogatari. The revival of Kuge culture in the Edo period has become a key to understanding how images of the Heian period have been developed today. In the exhibition, there will be newly acquired items from the Edo period on display that were donated to the museum.
