Tamamura Hokuto (Zennosuke, 1893-1951), who was active as an avant-garde nihonga (Japanese-style painting) artist in the Taisho (1912-1926) and Showa (1926-1989) periods, was born in Kyoto. After having studied at the Kyoto City Vocational School of Painting, he relocated to Tokyo and distinguished himself in such groups as the Nihonbijutsuin. However, he expressed distaste for conventional nihonga and dedicated himself to avant-garde art movements such as Daiichi Sakka Doumei and Sanka Bijutsu Kyoukai. Most avant-garde expression in modern Japan was spearheaded by so-called yo-ga (western-style painting) artists, but Tamamura participated as the sole nihonga artist and established a highly unique career. Through approximately 110 works, the entire scope of this anomalous painter will be introduced for the very first time.
