Shinya Nakamura "Figures of Prayer, 16 Disciples of Shaka Nyorai and Miserere"
This event has ended.
At Paramita Museum
Media: Sculpture
Shinya Nakamura, born in Mie 1926, exhibited his sculpture at the 6th Nitten exhibition in 1950 for the first time. He was assigned as a professor at University of Kagoshima in 1951 and continuously produced and exhibited work at the Nitten, Niccho-ten and Hakujitsu-ten exhibitions. When studying in France in 1966 and 1969, his master described him as "a figurative artist who could achieve an abstract boundary" in seeking elegance and spirituality.
His "Miserere" series, influenced by Georges Rouault's work, were acquired by the Musei Vaticani in 1996 and were considered as a deep spiritual expression of human beings beyond religious appreciation. In addition, he travelled to India to trace the 16 disciples of Shaka Nyorai's descent and researched their physical features to add characteristics to their portrait sculptures. This exhibition features a selection from his two main series of the eastern and western figures of prayer.
