Throughout history, Kyoto has developed a sophisticated arts and craft culture. Kyoto prefecture has always engaged in fostering the development of this culture through art competitions and nurturing new artists. The most recent initiative is the art competition, Kyoto Kogei (crafts) Biennale 2008.
The competition consists of two categories: public application and invitation of selected new artists. The exhibition also features works on the theme of "the Tale of Genji" along with its 1000-year anniversary project.
Also on display: "Tools of Craft and Art in Kyoto" (A collaboration between Italian craft designers and craft artists in Kyoto).
