Chiari Endo "Under The Sky: Columbia, South America"
Osaka Nikon Salon
This event has ended.
This photographer went to Colombia's second largest city Medizin, in 2004 to visit a friend. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' guide on traveling abroad, the country was designated as a dangerous zone with internal conflicts, drug dealing, murderous crimes, guerilla warfare and abduction. Upon entering the country though, she encountered friendly warm people. However, she quickly realized how dangerous photographing ordinary citizens was through her daily walks through the streets with her camera and warnings from local police. Oddly, she also found that she attracted attention because Asians were so rare, and that people would always instinctively look away if she pointed the camera at them. The 70 black and white photographs presented here were taken amidst the attention she received as a stranger with a camera, and the cold views of the public.
