"A Movement of Dolls in Kyoto: Dolls and Places" Exhibition
This event has ended.
At Gallery Raku
Media: Product, Art Talk, Performance Art
"Dolls are not just miniatures of human beings but embodiments of wishes, love and pity," said Shoho Menya, the 14th generation artisan of dolls. Menya has produced dolls that differ from our regular conception; by using a mass of clay with tiny swells and dents, they have minimal features that represent a human figure. Through these figures, we can interpret the thoughts and backdrop of why our ancestors started making dolls as a form of communication.
This exhibition features historical figures of dolls, tools, and in-process pieces that have been made and preserved by the Menya family in Kyoto.
