"Kanji Maeta et Paris" Exhibition
This event has ended.
At Shinsaibashi Exhibition Room for Osaka City Modern Museum (Tentative Name)
Media: Painting, Other, Art Talk
Kanji Maeta (1896-1930) was closely associated with Osaka-born Yuzo Saeki and left a lasting mark on early Showa period painting. Born in Tottori, Maeta studied in Paris for two and a half years after graduating from the Tokyo Fine Arts School in 1923. He held strong interests in the forms of western painting and derived his realism from his comprehensive research in the avant-garde of Cubism, as well as more typical styles of Courbet and Ingres. After returning to Japan his inquiring mind did not cease its activity; he repeatedly published his research and was marked as a fresh spirit amongst his painter contemporaries. Further, along with the pioneering young artists resident in Paris in the 1920s, such as Saeki, Katsuzo Satomi and so on, Maeta formed the "1930 Committee", founding an era in western-style painting. Maeta fell victim to ill health at the age of 33, prematurely breaking off his pursuits, but his activities and works are said to have created great influence.
This exhibition will focus on the results and role of Maeta's labors in Paris. Alongside introducing his works from his time abroad there will be pieces from his own influences Courbet and Maurice de Vlaminck, and those from his collaborators, Saeki and so on. Overall some 60 works will be displayed, including documents, allowing us to get closer to Maeta's Paris. What is more, this is Maeta's first retrospective exhibition in Kansai for thirty years and his first ever in Osaka.
