Albert Anker (1831-1910) was born in Ins (or Anet in French), in the canton of Bern, and it was there that he grew up on the border between two cultures; one French-speaking, the other Germanic. In 1864 he married Anna Ruefli. The couple had six children, of whom two died in infancy. Because of his activities, Anker and his family regularly spent the winter in Paris and the summer in Ins.
Anker has been the most popular Swiss painter of the 19th century, and even after almost 100 years his popularity doesn't seem to decline. The characters from his paintings - girls knitting, lively and playful schoolchildren, old men smoking their pipes - are accessible to a very broad public.
This exhibition features some 100 of Anker's works, composed mainly of his oil paintings and including sketches and watercolor painting as well.
