Showa Elegance Depicted by Female Artists

Exhibition of four female Kyoto artists whose works represent the variety of expression in art of the Showa era (1926–1989), and are full of lyricism and femininity. Hisako Kajiwara created modern-day bijinga (images of beautiful women) based on “real life” depictions of women of the time, while her students, Tazu Hirota and Toshiko Mitani sought their own ideas of female beauty in their depictions of subjects such as maiko (apprentice geisha) and in nudes. Another artist and student of the renowned Shoen Uemura, Eigetsu Kitazawa harmonizes realistic and decorative styles.
