Chosui Yabu, a Shaseiga Painter in Osaka During the Late-Edo Period

Commemorating 200th anniversary of his birth, this exhibition introduces the diverse body of works by the prominent Osaka artist Chosui Yabu (1814–1867). In addition to a selection of his landscapes, flower and bird paintings, portraits, and shaseiga (realistic nature sketches), Yabu’s paintings of an Indian elephant brought to Osaka on an American ship in 1866 are on display. These works demonstrate the high level of culture maintained in Osaka during the tumultuous late-Edo period.
