Hiroshige Kagawa “Giant Paintings Unite Tohoku and Kobe 2014”

Hiroshige Kagawa, who was born in Miyagi Prefecture, responded to the Great East Japan Earthquake by creating original and enormous paintings 5.4 meters by 16.4 meters in size. Provoking flashback moments, these works deal with Kagawa’s experience with the disaster, the fundamental strength that only it could produce, and its effects on all people.
These massive paintings portray both Tohoku and Kobe as places stricken by disaster, bringing back memories of those times for Kobe residents and others affected by calamity. The works provide an opportunity for more people to reflect together on the difficulties faced by those from afflicted areas. In this way, art has the power to unite Tohoku and Kobe so that these disasters are not forgotten, playing an important role in encouraging us to ask, “What can we do now?” and take action.
In the same space as these enormous paintings, Norio Akasaka, head of the Fukushima Museum, will discuss the complex problems of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Fukushima’s nuclear power, as well as the revitalization of Fukushima and issues Japan is likely to encounter in the future. This is an opportunity for everyone, especially students, to come together and think about these matters.
