This event has ended.

On the Okinawan island of Hateruma, Japan’s southernmost inhabited island, there is the legend of Paipateroma. According to the tale, in the year 1648, 40–50 overly taxed villagers living on Hateruma escaped to the southern island of Paipateroma. Their leader, Shige Matsu, set off on the boat of the Ishigaki Island lord Moritsune but was mistakenly dismissed upon arrival. They headed back to the Yaeyama Islands, but washed up on the southern island. They finally arrived with their crew on the Yaeyama Island of Yonaguni the following year. These color photographs contemplate the whereabouts of the Paipateroma Island.
