From the archives of Conde Nast, a selection of historical photographs that visually illustrate how we got to where we are now
Fashion photography distills the taste of every era, and has made a huge contribution to the evolution of visual culture. Since it was acquired by the businessman Conde Nast in 1909, Vogue has featured a vast array of influential people. Conde Nast was quick to grasp the possibilities presented by photography, and it was his hiring of outstanding photographers that helped elevate fashion photography to an art form. Since that time, for more than 100 years, the publishing company Conde Nast has been sending masterworks of fashion photography out into the world through its magazines Vogue, Vanity Fair, Glamour and others. The archive includes work from some of the greatest photographers who ever lived: Edward Steichen in his early days, Irving Penn and William Klein after World War II, the golden age of fashion photography, and Helmut Newton with his innovative aesthetic sensibility, among many others.
This collection of Conde Nast photographs travels to Kyotographie this year direct from their showing at Chanel Nexus Hall in Tokyo. While only a limited selection from this group will be shown in Tokyo, the full traveling exhibition will be shown at Kyotographie.

* This exhibition is held in the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art Annex (1F).
* This exhibition is part of the Kyotographie International Photography Festival.
