The concept of an apocalypse in Buddhism refers to the steady decline of Buddha’s teachings after his death, leaving not a single person able to attain enlightenment. The aristocrats who believed in this prediction of the apocalypse in 1052, the 7th year of the Eishou era, produced beautiful works of art and prayed for passage to paradise. Sacred texts and statues were buried in order to protect them by those who believed that Maitreya would appear on earth and achieve enlightenment. This exhibition introduces the ‘jewels’ of Buddhism through sacred texts, painted scrolls and sculptures.
