Stage makeup adds further dimensions to an actor’s performance and plays an especially important role in Peking Opera, traditional Chinese theater, and Japanese Kabuki. Focusing on the hand-painted “renpu” stage makeup of Chinese theater and the “kumadori” makeup of kabuki, as seen in colored woodblock prints, this exhibition introduces the many faces of the stage originating in these traditional arts. You may even find faces to remind you of the heroes and other characters of the screen and stage today.
