2017 Collection Exhibition: Feminine Reflections of Time
BB Plaza Museum of Art
Sotaro Yasui "Black-haired Woman" (1924) oil on canvas
This event has ended.
Nudes in Japanese painting have been based on Western artistic standards and ideals of the body since the Meiji era. The female image remains a key motif to this day, with many artists depicting women not just for their physical beauty but also as symbols of spiritual beauty. In oil paintings, prints, and sculptures, this exhibition traces artistic ideas of feminine beauty from the Meiji period through the present. It also introduces the erotic world of Hiroshi Matsumoto, an artist with ties to Kobe who portrayed not only the physical body but human psychology as well.
