Defining Japanese Western art, Ryuzaburo Umehara (1888-1986) was known as the “Lion of the Art World” due to his dynamic personality. As Japan began to modernize, Umehara, at the age of 20, made the journey to France in 1908 just as oil painting was establishing itself in Japan. And it was in France that he met Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) in 1909. Umehara became Renoir’s devoted pupil, studying with him, and developed a close relationship with his teacher, learning many things through their time together. Following this, Umehara incorporated Japanese traditional techniques such as Momoyama art, the Rinpa school, and Nanga. In this way, he developed a rich, luxurious style of painting and was evaluated highly as an established master of Japanese Western art. This exhibition will not only show the works of Renoir and Umehara, but will introduce the interaction of modern art between East and West through works about 80 pieces from Umehara’s collection as well as works by artists such as Picasso and Rouault with whom Umehara enjoyed close friendships.
