Kyosai Kawanabe (from 1831 to 1889) is an illustrator who lived in times of turbulence from the late Tokugawa to the Meiji period. After having become a disciple of of ukiyoe artist Kuniyoshi Utagawa at the age of 7, Kyosai Kawanabe devoted himself to painting and printmaking. From the Israel Goldman Collection are a rich variety of prints, illustrated diaries, and traditional nihonga paintings all brimming with humor.
