This event has ended.

The start of the Meiji Restoration in 1868 was accompanied by government-led efforts to promote new industries and exports, and an increased interest in Japanese art abroad. By producing documents such as the Onchi zuroku (Catalogue of Design Patterns), Japan made a national effort to provide guidance on the design of crafts. Locally, this led to the establishment of the Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting, which provided practical training, and the involvement of numerous Nihon-ga (Japanese-style) painters ensured that the study of design evolved to meet the needs of the era. Along with examples of Meiji crafts, this exhibition assembles a collection of pieces by Nihon-ga painters, who made and designed crafts, to shed light on the works of art that emerged as Japanese society was entering the modern age.
