In 1987, Kiyonaga Itoh donated artworks to Izushi-cho as part of a 30th anniversary exhibition, "Leading Figure of Contemporary Painting: Kiyonaga Itoh". The museum opened its doors in 1989 with a purpose in preserving Itoh's works as well as supporting local emerging artists.
