The Nara Prefectural Museum of Art opened in March 1973, when Kanbo Yoshikawa, a Japanese painter and cultural anthropologist, donated Japanese paintings, Ukiyoe, and crafts from the Edo period. After acquiring two other collections as well as works by prominent ceramist Kenkichi Tomimoto, the museum's collection expanded to a total of 4200 items. The museum hosts exhibitions and researches based on these collections.
