The Tenri University Sankokan Museum opened its doors in 1930 as a museum promoting artifacts from abroad. The founder, Seizo Nakayama, believed that in order to promote Tenrikyo (Teaching of Divine Reason) overseas, one must be familiar with other cultures. Now the collection has expanded to 300,000 items, some of which are displayed in the museum.
The museum renovated and reopened in November 2001. From the collection, 3000 artifacts are displayed under the themes of living cultures of the world, and the world's archaeological arts. In addition, there is also an interactive information booth and library, and occasional seminars and special exhibitions are held in the museum.
