Kodai-ji Temple is located north east of Yasaka Hokanji Temple at the foot of Higashiyama Ryozen Mountains in Kyoto. It is renowned for its fine examples of maki-e (Japanese lacquer with gilded patterns) typical of the Momoyama period (late 16th century) and includes a number of Important Cultural Properties amongst its buildings and temple treasures.The historic site of the garden surrounding Kaisando is also said to be the work of the great garden designer, Kobori Enshu.
