"Osaka's Actor Portraits" Exhibition

From September 12th, 2007, until October 1st, 2007, the Osaka Museum of History presents "Osaka's Actor Portraits" at the 8th floor exhibition room. This exhibition features about 50 prints which includes Ryukosai's "Rien-Syoga" and Yoshitaki's "Natsumatsuri-Naniwa-Kagami" which depict the movement of Osaka theatrical prints that have a different style in comparison with Edo's Ukiyo-e.
Osaka theatrical prints started at the end of the 18th century when Osaka had many theaters around Dotonbori, and many attended Kabuki performances. With the popularity of Kabuki, Osaka theatrical prints were created as a way to support the actors and were popular among the fans. During the Tenpo period (1833-1844), theatrical printmakers became an established profession and the prints were avidly produced until the Meiji period.
