Amidst the social and political changes that occurred modern Japan, Japanese painting also changed drastically. As the western style of painting became increasingly popular, traditional Japanese painting was also heavily influenced by this style and thus, was referred to as "Nihon-ga" (Japanese painting).
The exhibition features approximately 70 Japanese and western paintings from the permanent collection, ranging between the Meiji and early Showa periods.
