In Japan, the Tanuki (a raccoon like animal) has appeared in countless traditional fables as a trickster, including the famous "Kachi Kachi Mountain". In the world of art, the Tanuki has appeared frequently in paintings and ceramic arts since the late Edo period. In fact, the Shigaraki area is known for its ceramic Tanuki sculptures. The exhibition focuses on "Tanuki and the Japanese" and looks at how Japanese culture has depicted the animal in ceramics, paintings and literature. Approximately 120 works will be on display.
