Approximately 150 years ago, during the last days of the shogunate, Japan opened itself to the world and started creating an independent nation, using the Western civilization as its role model. Also in the world of art, artist enthusiastically adopted styles and touches of western painting. Yuichi Takahashi (1828-94) was especially fascinated by the impressive expression of western lithography and became a pioneer in introducing Western paintings from the last days of the shogunate. This exhibition introduces 88 pieces by 46 artists including Yuichi Takahashi, who participated in the dawn of Japanese modern Western painting, and artists who had followed and struggled on establishing modern western painting in Japan from the Meiji period till the early Showa period.
