"Female and Prayer, A Figure of Faith" Exhibition
Biwako Bunkakan
This event has ended.
The innocent belief towards the divine occurs regardless of gender and the social status. In Japan, the very first priest was a female, and in history, Komyo empress and the Shotoku emperor manifested Buddhism as the national religion during the Nara and Heian periods. Since the Kamakura era, females took an important role to express the devotion as a vower, a connector and executor. This exhibition features sculptures, paintings, writings and crafts by female believers who were both financially independent and visualized their faith actively.
