”Horyuji National Treasures" Exhibition

World Heritage Site Horyuji's Kondo (Gold Hall), in Ikarugacho, Nara, is known as the world's oldest existing wooden structure. Inside the hall, the statues represent the inheritance of the Asuka era, the dawning of Buddhist culture in Japan, and can be considered as essential treasures in the long and continuous history of the religion. On the occasion of the restoration of the Shumidan in the Kondo, along with the works already part of the museum's collection, in this exhibition a wider selection of the statues of Kondo will be on display.
The exhibiting of the Devas statues installed in the four corners of the Shumidan will be the first time ever outside of the temple. These sculptures, as recorded in the Nihon Shoki, were made by Oguchinoatai Yamaguchi, and are wonderful examples of ancient Asian art's various forms.
