This event has ended.

This year marks the 65th volume of the Shoso-in Exhibition, adding color to the rich autumn hues in Nara. The objects here provide an overview of the museum colletion, with special attractions include graceful Buddhist implements such as the Lotus-Shaped Lacquered Incense Burner Base with Painting on Gold Leaf, and objects from Emperor Shomu’s personal belongings, such as the Round Mirrors Backed with Mother-of-Pearl Decorations and the Standing Screens. Other items recall the life style of ancient peoples: musical instruments, gigaku masks, games, accessories, like the beautifully worked small penknives, and ritual implements for yearly ceremonies held at the palace. Also characteristic of this year’s exhibition is the large number of pieces that have been conserved, restored and otherwise preserved for future generations. This is an exhibition intended to offer insight into the life and culture of the Nara period at close quarters.
