Cherry Blossoms in Nihonga Painting— From Taikan Yokoyama to Chinami Nakajima
Museum “Eki” Kyoto
This event has ended.
An exhibition of around 55 works featuring cherry blossoms by some 40 Nihonga painters including Taikan Yokoyama, Gyokudo Kawai, and Shunso Hishida. Loved by Japanese people since ancient times, cherry blossoms can be found in anthologies of classical and modern Japanese poetry, and their lovely colors and forms have graced clothing and furnishings made with the designs of various arts and crafts. Japan’s scenery is at its most beautiful when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and during this splendid season people project thoughts of the ephemeral nature of life onto the blossoms. The impatience with which the Japanese people wait for forecasts of their blooming, which herald the coming of spring, is surely a testament to the depth of feeling for the blossoms that has been cultivated and passed down through the generations. This exhibition presents the opportunity to take a fresh look at the particular sensitivity and aesthetic sensibility the Japanese reserve for cherry blossoms and enjoy Nihonga painters’ diverse portrayal of and thoughts about them.
