Special Opening Exhibition: National Treasures from Todaiji

Abeno Harukas Art Museum

This event has ended.

In honor of its opening, the Abeno Harukas Art Museum presents a special exhibitions of National Treasures from Todaiji, which has stood as a religious symbol of Japan since its founding by Emperor Shomu more 1,250 years ago. Beginning with the “Shaka at Birth,” a bronze standing Buddha sculpture presented in celebration of this birth of a new art museum, on display are a fine selection of National Treasures that inform viewers about Todaiji at the time of its establishment, as well as the temple’s traditions and history of reconstruction following several disasters. These works introduce a temple that has existed with all of Japan’s people for centuries— from Imperial Court members to shoguns and the common people.
