Western painting often refers to oil painting. Since the Meiji era, artists hoping to absorb Western visual culture have produced Japanese-style oil paintings of unique landscapes, and these works transcend the genre of “western” painting. Tracing the formative history of the museum’s collection, this exhibition introduces roughly 100 years of oil paintings.
