Mountain Deities - Yoshino, Kumano, Koya

Osaka Municipal Museum of Art

This event has ended.

The Kii Peninsula stretching the three prefectures of Mie, Nara and Wakayama are stretched by the Kii mountain range which reach heights of over 1000m and are attacked by the ferocious winds of the pacific while also subject to heavy rainfall. But it is amongst such harsh conditions that a rich ecosystem of nature has evolved and has also established since ancient times sacred associations of these rising peaks, centering around Yoshino, Kumano and Koya. In 2004 these areas were designated as UNESCO world heritage sites as places of sacred pilgrimage and distinct culture. In celebration of 10 years since this recognition this exhibition highlights the array of deities inhabiting these regions.
