“Treasures of Todai-ji’s Omizutori Ritual”

The famed Omizutori, Water Drawing Ceremony of Nigatsu-do,Todai-ji is a historic Buddhist ceremony welcoming in the Spring, said to have been introduced by the Priest Jicchu in 752. Renowned for its fire display, this ritual marks an offering of prayer of repentance to the Juichimen Kannon Bosatsu (Kannon Buddhisattva with eleven faces) and entreats for good harvests and protection from harm. Overcoming the ravages of war and disaster this annual ceremony has been realized to date 1262 times and while the main ceremony takes place in middle of night on 12th March, rituals are enacted throughout a period of 1 month from 20th February. To coincide with this year’s ceremony this exhibition showcases implements from this rite of Spring, including historic documents, paintings and artifacts deepening our understanding of this notable religious event.
