The“Famous Places of Tokaido; Shanks Mare” follows the adventures of Yaji-robe and Kita-hachi from Jippensha Ikku’s Tokaidochu Hizakurige. The Tokaido road was a vital channel between the city of Edo and Kyoto in the Edo era, traversed by a whole cross section of the population from common folk to feudal lords, travelling by foot, by horse and by carriage, always a bustle of activity. In 1889 with the completion of the Tokaido railway, the road which Yajirobe and Kitahachi had followed came into increasing disuse, but began to revive interest in a nostalgic way through the Taisho period. This exhibition presents all 59 panels of the “Famous Places of Tokaido; Shanks Mare” along with examples of various printing techniques used in this era, revealing the craftsmanship involved in creating a single color image and deepening an appreciation of an art form which rose through the Edo period.
