These 15 photographs have been awarded the 2014 Canon Photography New Century Prize. Meaning “distant,” the title refers to a poem the photographer read immediately after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake 20 years ago: “I entrust the birds flying to some far, distant place with my wish that they will carry peace.”
