The Kobe Fashion Museum opened in April, 1997 with the philosophy “Fashion is a mirror reflecting its age.” With a special focus on the media-influenced fashion of the 20th century’s mass-produced culture, it collects and exhibits fashion-related photography, posters, prints, film, and publishings, as well as folk costumes, textiles, shoes, hats, fans, accessories, and generally all items that go on the body. Now several years into the 21st century, the museum once again considers questions such as “What is fashion?” and “What is a collection?” It has reached the conclusion that fashion is ultimately a human endeavor that reflects the various ways in which people change. Fashion is born from a balance of clashing ideas such as “variation and normalcy,” “the ordinary and the extraordinary,” and “the sublime and the conventional.” Inviting visitors to reexamine what fashion is and where its strengths lie, this exhibition presents 123 exciting masterpieces from the various fields of fashion. These many exquisite articles of clothing from numerous times and places construct a mysteriously beautiful world with special exhibition techniques and more than 10 original mannequins with full hair and makeup. Through fashion plates, photographs, and films, visitors can retrace the history how beauty is conveyed. Come rediscover the true charm of the museum’s collection.
