Shoujou Ooido started drawing seriously after seeing the ancient Japanese cedar trees that still grow on Yakushima Island. He has drawn fragments of nature such as trees, animals, and fungi ever since. His elaborate works, which sometimes require years to complete, are simple yet contain various elements and a condensed energy that can overwhelm the viewer. In Ooido’s drawings, it seems almost as if the the power of nature comes through him and the traces of his life.
This is his first solo exhibition at Foil. His work was also featured in special group shows in 2012 and 2013 at Foil and Zenkyoan.
