This event has ended.

Driven by a desire to express their inner selves, human beings have been creating diverse forms of sculpture since ancient times. This exhibition introduces archeological artifacts including clay and wooden figurines and haniwa sculptures, with a focus on cultural assets. From wooden natabori Buddha carvings to idols, the sculptures of the Buddhist monk Enku, and the recently popular Art Brut movement, these displays trace the lineage of sculptural arts from their heretical religious origins in Japan through folk crafts from overseas, probing the “sculptural impulse” at the heart of human spirituality.
