This event has ended.

This exhibition is held in commemoration of the 180th anniversary of the birth of Tessai Tomioka (1836-1924). With fluid brushwork and rich colors, Tomioka’s work leaves remarkable impressions: sketches drawn during his nationwide tour, paintings of enchanted lands depicting a utopia for the literati, portraits and other paintings based on historical events and Chinese and Japanese classics, genre paintings, and paintings of flowers, birds and animals. Tomioka lived his life as a man of letters and left many masterpieces of calligraphy as well. Around 150 of his artworks are on display, showcased along with paintings by modern artists influenced by him in an examination of his position in modern Japanese art. (There will be a rearrangement of displays during the exhibition period.)
