Okyo’s Pine Tree in Snow and Goshu’s White Plum Tree
Itsuo Art Museum
This event has ended.
This exhibition compares and contrasts the works of painters Okyo Maruyama, leader of the Maruyama School, and Goshun Matsumura, an important artist of the Shijo School. Maruyama and Matsumura were contemporaries, both producing florid works in the Kyoto style of Nihonga paintings. Displays here include a study for Maruyama’s “Pine Tree in Snow” folding screen, a National Treasure, and Goshun’s “White Plum Tree” folding screen, an Important Cultural Property. Works by students of both artists are also exhibited and key differences between their two schools of art are elaborated upon.
