Emaki picture scrolls combining the written word and visual art have flourished in Japan. Each emaki scene is part of a story that unfolds before the eye, taking the viewer into new worlds. While emaki at most museums are kept behind glass cases, the previous collectors of these works have allowed for a more up close and personal experience. Along with emaki, the second part of this exhibition features sutras, offering a look into the origins of picture scrolls.
