"The Decorative and Circular Beauty - National Treasure 'Enbuta' -" Exhibition
This event has ended.
At Byodoin Temple Museum Hoshokan
Media: Architecture, Sculpture
Byodoin Temple began the "Heisei Restoration" by renovating numerous national treasures since 2004, including Ho-o-do's sculptures. The Engai (a circular cover with decorative flowers) was the final item to be restored. The Engai was restored after a 100 year period, and this may be the last time it is on view to the public.
The Engai features floral motifs that are made by carving 1-2 mm deep into the wood and using strenuous strokes. Typically, the Engai is located on the top of the Honson and it is hard to see its complete presence because of the natural light shining from the back.
