The exhibition features Kanjiro Kawai's ceramics focusing on the diversity of his techniques and forms. In 1890, Kawai was born as a son of a master builder. After attending Tokyo Institute of Technology and Kyoto Municipal Ceramic Research Institute, he started to work independently. After his early period of producing exquisite works that imitate ancient Chinese and Korean ceramics, he became one of the protagonists of the folk craft movement with Soetsu Yanagi and Shoji Hamada. During this period, he eventually developed interest towards creating his own in Ethno-forms. He was also referred to as a "glaze master" from his talent of handling various glazes.
After his death, his followers, Hirotsugu Kawai, Takeichi Kawai, Kazutomo Takahashi, Tsuneji Ueda, Kazutaka Ikuta, Masao Moriyama, Shunsui Mukunoki, Hisashi Kawai, Toru Kawai, and Toshitaka Kawai, continued to make ceramics in the "Kawai tradition."
