Media: Painting, Prints, Sculpture, Crafts

Sumio Kawakami (1895-1972) was born in Yokohama during the Meiji era. After graduating Aoyama Gakuin High School, he studied abroad in Canada and the United States, and became an English teacher at Utsunomiya while practicing printmaking in his spare time. Kawakami has produced prints of various styles, yet many of them absorb European influences prominent in the Meiji era. The exhibition displays woodcut prints, watercolor paintings, and glass works, which represent Kawakami's romantic approach and show his unique perspective on European culture.
