Gaku Azuma "Tenyou"

This exhibition will introduce the work of Gaku Azuma. Clad in monk's garb and leather sandals, resident of Osaka Minami's Iromachi district, creating posters for selected theatre companies, painter of erotic women, enfant terrible graphic designer Azuma has been called a Heisei era ukiyoe artist. His "Oiran Series" of bokuga (black ink paintings) has received much attention around the world and was used in the Yasumichi Morita-designed New York Japanese restaurant "Megu". In 2007 Parco published his highly anticipated "Tenyou" collection of bokuga.
This exhibition will showcase in addition to 30 prints from the book, for the first time in Japan 15 pieces from his new "Oiran Series" intended for the Megu London branch. Further, the "Fu and Rai Goddesses", introduced by the NHK-broadcast "The Eternal Fujin and Raijin Scene: Soutatsu Tawaraya", and the "Kishimojin" that appeared in SKY PerfecTV, will also be shown.

今日から始まった
東學 墨画展：『天妖』
は、会場に入って立ち尽くしてしまう出来。
暗闇に息つく”女”はこの世に居る筈もなく妖しくて…。
特に半人半獣の構図の作品は、墨で色彩が無い分、
凄みさえ感じる。
けれど…。
一番気に入ったのは、學さんの落款だ。
菱形の象形文字みたいな朱色が、作品のここかしこに…。
会期は４日間。
見に行った方が絶対いい…。

「眉が描かれていないからこそ艶かしい」
当展示のパンフレットを知り合いのギャラリーで見せたときに偶然居あわせた女性ピアニストの発言である。
東氏の墨画は、その線に価値がある。10本にも満たない線で構成される女性の貌の色艶は、他の現代を生きる画家達の追随を許さない美を保持している。
そしてところどころに含まれる遊び心ともいえるような、絵画でしかありえない表現。かのルネ・マグリットやデルヴォーの絵が好きな方であれば、初見の方でも東氏の作品の良さにすぐ気づくと思われる。
繊細で大胆な墨運びによって生まれた何とも謂えぬ女達の存在感は、見ていてただ感嘆にくれるばかりである。
池田氏・片桐氏とのコラボレートも鮮やかで、今回の展示のすばらしさを引き立たせている。これらは実際によく見ていただければ解るだろう。
公開されている作品は、今年の東京での展示で発表された作品なども含め多数展示されている。今後はしばらく展示機会がないということなので、是非見逃さないでいただきたい。
