The end of the Edo period and the Meiji Restoration was a turbulent time in Japan. In the world of manga, many artists incorporated the European satire found in illustrations. During this period, Kyosai was considered a forerunner and his works were published in prominent media. By incorporating the Kanoh school's stylistic elements, he was eager to experiment, and thus received much attention from international media.
The exhibition features on Kyosai's role in manga history, his draftsmanship, and his innovative works.
